Magneto operation?

I am installing a Magneto on my JD "B". According to the manual you install a bare wire in the top post and have the other end of the wire within 1/8" of the metal case. Then slowly turn the Magneto until you get a spark. Once you get the spark you stop and install the Mag.
I cannot get a spark at all. I have checked the gap. made sure the wire had good contact inside the top sparkplug wire post and cleaned everything but still nothing.
This is a Wico "X" magneto. I bought this several years ago ( supposedly new) in anticipation of working on my tractor. So there won't be any sending it back.
Any ideas of what the problem may be?
What I might be doing wrong?
Thanks,
Rich

ASSUMING the mag was working when you bought it, the MOST LIKELY scenario would be that the breaker points are oxidized/dirty.

Drag a piece of clean white cardstock through 'em a few times followed by spray of electrical contact cleaner, then allow to air-dry in the "open" postion and then check again for spark.

Do you get a good snap when turning counter clock wise? Clean points with a dollar bill. I assume you have contact on the coil post with the cap. Try a new condenser. Ron Mn.

Thanks for the replies.
I did clean the points, actually I removed them and used a point file to clean them.
Feels like I am getting a good snap but no spark.
I will try the new condenser before I go to much further.
Thanks again,
Rich

IMHO, the fact that you have FILED the points pretty much explains their intermittent function.
