SYNTHETIC OIL

Synthetic oil is superior to standard oils but it might not be cost effective in a tractor. These oils are usually best for high performance cars and trucks and vehicles that see a lot of miles in period of time.
Tractors would be best with a heavy duty oil like Rotella, or any major brand.
Tractors probably don't see enough hours of use to justify it.
But ya it is the best stuff. Just not cost effective in a tractor.

Real synthetic oil by Mobile I, Amsoil, Royal Purple or Lubrication Engineers.
The so called synthetic sold by Castrol is just treated mineral oil.

Vs. mineral oils.Synthetic oil doesn't thicken in cold temps or coke at extreme temps. Higher wear resistance on hypoid gears, cam followers etc.

I started using Shell Rotella in everything I own a few years back. Its definitly cheaper than any synthetic. Seems to clean the old engines very well considering there was non-detergent oils used in the day. Just my thoughts, but I would save the money and not use synthetic.

If I were to use some expensive synthetic oil, what would be best to do for a treatment or cleaning of the internal parts of the engine prior to adding it? In the back of my mind I keep thinking Slick 50? Do they still sell that stuff?

There are quite a few oil additives that you can dump in 15 minutes before changing oil. Most are a form of solvent. All do about the same and run out with the dirty oil. Change your filter and repeat one time in 20 hours of use. That seems to provide a good result. Then its detergent oil time.
