hydraulic cylinder rebuild help

I'm working on a JD 146 loader rebuilding the lift cylinder. Having trouble getting the gland to separate from the main housing. Is there a keeper that I'm missing or do I just pressure it out?

Try to find a picture, or drawing, of how it"s
built. Maybe JD parts has a breakdown. Sometimes the packing, piston cup, or O-ring, will catch in
a snap ring groove. Some big professional hydraulic shops have "Pullers" that the put
cylinders in to "Pull them apart".

I did both of mine on the 148 last summer. Dealer printed out the parts breakdown, so had a good reference. Might have been two snap rings involved- one is at the end of the tube. need to push the gland back to fully expose it, then remove with screwdriver, pick, etc. Clean up the bore with emery cloth before trying to get the piston out- takes very little crud to prevent disassembly. Used air to push it out. I pressurized the cyl with air after assembly to push the gland tight against the outer snap ring before mounting on the loader. Make sure you point the cupped seals on the piston in the right direction. Printout should show that, or talk to the JD tech. I clamp one end of the cyl in the vise. My workbench has multiple vertical square tubes welded to it, where I can slip in a U-shaped support. I use one close enough to the vise that supports the tube, so the cyl rod is free to travel, and doesn"t get scratched sliding along the bench.
