john deere 1010 distributor

"any old 4 cyl Delco may work"...IF..the height
is right..and..you may have to change the gear, unless it's tang drive.

I went to the local parts store.......no luck. I am now asking for help to narrow down my search. The distributor on the tractor is "slot" drive. It does not have a gear.

Any suggestion on a type of vehicle I could compare this too?

I needed a distributor for a fire-damaged 1010 a few years ago. Local tractor salvage yard sold me one (Delco). I ran it for several years before I discovered it was from a Deere 4020, not a 1010. So, if anything, it proves others fit. Note: A six cylinder distributor, with a four-cylinder cap stuck on it - WILL run a four cylinder engine. I found out the hard way. It ran on all four, but had many problems, including severe burning of the distributor cap.

I later fixed it by removing the 6 lobe points cam, taking a 4 lobe cam out of a Case Delco VAC distributor, and all is fine now.

If you buy a used distributor from a 1010, don't buy the Wico or Presolite. Parts are getting scarce. Stick with the Delco.
