cracked timing cover 8n side mount

changed points dropped nut i thought on ground,got old nut and put on points, put everything together.hit the switch and distributer cap and all swang around front timing cover broke and small gear on timing shaft destroyed.(side mount distributor)what could have happened,took it all apart.. got new parts.but dont see how that nut could have gotten between those gears.now puzzle 2.prior to that tractor ran hot,checked everything(all things)and thermostat (orignal)not there,rebuilt entire motor 6 years ago and i cant imagine missing that,so i took the head off checked for signs of thermostat and found nothing.now i dont want to damage anything else.but not crazy about pulling tractor apart.any advice.please...... thanks,
 
Put it together and set the timing correctly and make sure the centrifugal advance is working.

If it still overheats have the radiator flow checked and clean if necessary.

As a last resort, pull the waterpump and look for an odd problem such as a broken or loose impeller.
