TIRE PATCH - WILL IT WORK ?

JUST FOUND A 1" X 1/4 " RIP ( CHUNCK) OUT OF THE INSIDE EDGE OF THE TIRE - 4" AWAY FROM RIM AND 4" AWAY FROM THE LUGS , TIRES HAVE TUBES AND ARE FILLED , COULD I PUT JUST A PATCH ON THE OUTSIDE OF IT ? IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE PUT BLACK SILICONE IN THE RIP BEFORE I BOUGHT THE TIRES , SO WHATS THE BEST FIS WITHOUT DRAINING THE TIRE OR TAKING IT ALL APART ?
 
I had a nearly new tire on my JD H cut anout 1" deep in one of the lugs by a broken bottle. I tried every home remedy I could think of, silicone, liquid rubber, etc. Nothing worked, just too much flexing. Finally after about 20 years the cut deepened to the cord of the tire. I took it off, went to an old time tire shop with it. I had to make a mold for the lug, but they cut out and molded a new lug on the tire. Cost was about $50 and it has been fine for 15 years. Mold wasn't all that hard to make. They had molds for other sizes but not 9.5x32. May not even need one for a side wall cut. You may have to look around to find a tire dealer that can still fix tire. I KNOW IF I DRAINED IT AND TOOK IT ALL APART I COULD USE A PATCH , BUT I WAS TRYING TO FIND SOMETHING TO USE WITHOUT TAKING THE TIRE APART
 
Last summer I had an old tire that the tube had pushed out thru the side wall of a 11/24 tractor tire. I went to a truck tire service and bought a large boot. I buffed the inside and used the tube patch cement, took a coupla tubes, and it is still holding fine. I doubt if you can do anything yourself at home from the outside that will work.
 
kinda learned back in the 50's from my Dad that if I had a problem with a piece of machinery that I might better get real active in getting the problem fixed rather than spend much time deliberating the problem. Seems as though you was back to work sooner and with a lot less questions as to why it took so long to get started.
