I have an early john deere 4020 and when starting, it only fires a few times and then it does nothing for over 20 sec. How can I check the injection timing or would it have another reason?

thanks,

Koen

do you mean this with part n°37 (picture 1)

The ball in the elbow falters now and again, could this be the cause?

I didn't found plastic trash in the valve housing.

How full is the fuel tank... is the level of the fuel higher than the IP?

I'm GUESSING the tank is less than 1/2 full, and there's a leak somewhere in the fuel system letting a little air in when it sits a while.

the fuel level is indeed a lot lower than the pump, but it would be strange becouse I was riding the tractor when the engine stopped running(there was no special noise or something). I have checked the injecton pipes at the injector and there was no visible air coming out, only fuel. I also replaced the fuel filters (they were messy) but it changed nothing.

If you have a Roosamaster "DB" pump, the plastic "governor damper ring" may be failing deep inside the pump.

This produces "coffee grounds looking" chunks that plug the pump's housing pressure regulating valve, preventing return fuel from leaving the pump, which shuts it down.

Does your pump look like the diagram? If so, Key #37 is the part I am referring to.

Remove the valve from the pump, and check for plastic chunks jammed inside it.

If that's what you find, post back.
