LORENCE "LARRY" COLTRIN Obituary

SCHAUMBURG - Lorence "Larry" Coltrin, 72, passed away while snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas National Park, near Key West, Florida. He was born to the late Allan and Florence (nee Litcher) Coltrin of Wood Dale, Illinois on September 5, 1942. He was preceded in death by his older brother Allan Coltrin. Larry graduated from Fenton High School in 1960. He met his wife, the late Audrey Coltrin (nee Connoyer) of Keeneyville, Illinois at the Pizza Cottage restaurant in Roselle, and married in 1962. They lived together in the rural, unincorporated area of Schaumburg, Illinois for over 45 years. Larry spent his life working in the concrete and excavating businesses and, like many his age, helped build the Chicagoland area. He co-owned Cardinal Excavating with his wife and retired in 2004. Larry was well known for his warm personality, enthusiastic nature and ever present sense of humor. He was a Leader, a Believer, an Explorer, and an Enjoyer of Life. He had a great love for family, farming, flying and people in general. He never met a stranger and his favorite pastime was telling stories! He obtained his pilot's license in 1968 and went on to earn his commercial license with instrument, flight instructor, and multi-engine ratings. He could be found many weekends teaching flying at the Chicago area airports. Larry loved aerobatic flying and built his own Pitts Special. He competed at both the local and national levels in the unlimited category and became the Illinois State Unlimited Aerobatic Champion in 1994. In later years, he became actively involved in restoring and farming with antique Oliver tractors and attended farm and tractor shows across the country. A regional favorite included the annual Sycamore Steam Show and Threshing Bee in Sycamore, Illinois. He was member of the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club, Hart-Par Oliver Collectors, Experimental Aircraft Association and the International Aerobatic Club. Larry was also an active member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Schaumburg and previously at St. Columba Episcopal Church in Hanover Park, Illinois. He is survived by his treasured children: Christopher Coltrin of Schaumburg, Kimberly (Coltrin) Porter and son-in-law LCDR David Porter USN of Fresno, CA; his four adored grandchildren: Sarah, Sean, Stephany and Thomas; his beloved brother and sister-in-law Tim and Beverly (Kabat) Coltrin and sister-in-law Carole Coltrin; loved girlfriend Annie Kershaw; numerous much-loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many, many friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 119 W. Wise Road in Schaumburg, followed by a celebration of his life in the main hangar at Schaumburg Regional Airport (06C), 905 E. Irving Park Road in Schaumburg, from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. Fly-ins welcome! In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to American Diabetes Association and Alexian Brothers Foundation.
