In a stock engine regardless of manufacture does one gain anything by having the cam reground for pulling? Considering factors that the rest of the engine is in good shape, compression etc. I would figure that over that course of time the pistons, sleeves and valves may have been serviced but not the cam. If one was to send out a cam to a grinder and told them that the engine specs were stock would they just polish it up or actually change the profiles since it was to be used for pulling. What do you guys think, worth having it ground? Just curious as I have never had any cams sent out.

thanks

Cams are certainly a place to gain performance, the more modified the engine is- the more to gain, however many stock engines can benefit from enhanced grind profile, -consider more improvements including cam if pulling is serious. Cut the head, higher dome pistons, better ignition, increased bore to name a few common areas.

Two thoughts. Many original cams have some wear and with the OE info and a dial indicator this can be found out. I think it depends on the engine. My C-260 in my Massey 44 went from 50 hp to 52 by going from 4 flat tops to 4 1/16 M&W Add Power pistons. It took porting on the head, shaving the head, a cam reground, better carb to get it to 67 hp @ 285 cid. My Farmall 450 engine @ 281 cid has 8:1 compression, will run 67 hp all day with only a bigger than OE venturi in the carb. The caveat is that the cam is not wore and the engine had been rebuilt before I got it so all the valve train was like new. The Farmall engine just breaths easier.

thanks for the feedback. I have to tear into a cooling system on my tractor this winter and perhaps ill pull the cam and see where is measures out.

thanks

that's very interesting just changing the venturi out. I wonder if that would help my cause as well. Does a larger venturi lead to more high end or low end power?

thanks

Wasted time and money with stock engine. I dont think you will gain anything , more and likely you will lose because intake wont be able to supply enough fuel for stochimetic combustion. Even it did you wont exhaust completely leaving exhaust in cylinder for next power stroke.
No getting around total engine performance appraisal looking at all the measurement associated ,just the facts .
Money better spent traction improved, for what ever tractor you have.
You will make your competition happy, easy a year of trying figure out whats wrong. While the competition has another year to improve .
