I have been pulling Farmalls most my life, however I recently had a Case 400 practically given to me. My end goal is to build this to a div 3/4 type tractor. My question is, other than the stock block, are there others that will bolt in that I can have more potential to build off of? Something similar to how 264/281 block can be used in a Farmall M?

I have not built a Case motor for pulling. But your motor is 251? Cu. In. A 870 is 336 cu. In. Block should fit. Have always heard 870 heads were better. But heads from a late 504 should be the same. But your motor is basically same dimension as a MM . So they can be made 5.5 x 7 fairly easy! So think big, and have fun!

As for the cases, Brad peters in pa has a couple good runners.

Vic, did you ever stumble across that old antique puller magazine from jan/feb 2011? Email is open if you want to send me a phone number, thanks !

A 284 from a 830 will bolt in, as will a 301 gas from an 870. The 284 will be much easier to find, and might work better with the natpa rules. 870 gas heads are the best heads to run on these engines. The 251 that’s in your 400 can be bored to 301 cubes and thats about it, the blocks from the 30 series tractors can be taken to much bigger with 504 sleeves and a flat top piston you can get 336 cubes. If you want to get wild I believe you can get close to 600 cubes with a bore and stroke on a a 30 series block. And to take it further you could convert 504 heads over to gas then you would get a cross flow head with no combustion chamber in the head.
