That was a 1st.

Younger son and I attended a pull
yesterday. Did not know until later
in the day that EVERY CLASS was
paying winner only. I have seen
"jackpot " classes done winner take
all but never every class offered.
Handbill advertised 50% payback per
class. I assumed they would pay 3 or
more spots: depending on number of
entries. we had pulled one of the
tractors 2 of the 8 classes we
entered before finding out the pay
schedule. We dropped the other 6
classes, loaded up and came home.
What are others opinions on no one
but the class winner receiving prize
money? And many of the classes with
15 plus entries. Just curious if I
am alone in my opinion.

It wouldn't make a particle of difference to me. I am not in it for the money, only to P($$ people off, LOL.

PretendFarmer,I agree, lessons like that are very important !!!!!!!!!!! And also, myself would have certainly figured to win at least one hook. LOL

Guess I should have stated my son was
included in making a joint decision.
He was not impressed either. He is
32 by the way. Half of the entry fee
was his money

I guess that changes things a bit.

Payback pulls are extremely rare around here. But obviously that's a thing where your from.

All we get to do is spend tens of thousands of $$ to get a $2 trophy....

Our club pays the first three places but if there is only 2 or 3 tractors in class I think they only pay first place. Once in a while somebody will put the money up for a Jackpot class and winner takes all. Myself I pull for the fun of it and our club has a nice bunch of guys to pull with.

Me and VicS make our living pulling tractors. I like Vic would of liked to know before I left home but if I was there already would of proably stayed for the day.

Around here, many of the pulls are just for fun.
If it's a fair pull they add money to the classes to bring people in. They payback spots based on class size. It's typical to have 30-35 in a class. Payback up to 10th place or even more. Smaller classes say 10 or so they may pay up to 5th. Some fair pulls will even pay nearly every place. You might get 5 bucks back on a $20 hook. All depends on the venue.

I prefer to go to pulls with a payback, who doesn't like the chance to win some money. But the fun pulls are just as good. Bragging rights and usually a bit cheaper on the hook fee.

I don't go to pulls for the money. I just go to make the JD owners mad.

Honestly, it wouldn't have bothered me. The one tractor would have had a good chance to win. The other most likely would not even come close. But it makes a good rolling weight rack.

are ya looking for a 3rd cause i would be in!

Not saying they misled. They are the
only pull I have attended in my 30
years of pulling that ONLY paid 1st.
Just very outside "normal " for our
area. Paying 1 place with 20 entries
means a 5% chance of getting money.
Paying 4 spots increases those odds
to 20%. Just my opinion that the more
people that get a little money the
more that will attend. If you have
only a few tractors that win money,
why would or should anyone else
bother to come. JMO

Pretend Farmer, I wish you could pull with our club. No Payback-BIG trophies and a 6 dollar
hook fee. We sell sponsorship's to cover the cost of the trophies and we pull for the fun
of it. We don't fight or argue and we all leave the pull as friends.

For our yearly show, we have a $10 hook fee, all for fun and a ribbon. And still don't make enough money to pay for the sled rental. We still have plenty of hooks to fill an evening. No way we could go for a $6 hook fee or payouts. Guess sleds are expensive around here. Club membership covers the insurance and grounds rental. The show is dying a slow death bleeding a bit every year and not growing.

We own our own Sled,9600 Ford pull back tractor-Scales-roller and equipment trailer-all
paid for and money in the bank and the 6 dollar hook fee and good sponsors have paid for it
all. We are not growing but we are holding our own. We put on 6 pulls a year and have for
many years.

(quoted from post at 17:55:15 04/03/18) 2nd place is first loser. Sounds like you weren't there to win, only place.

Nothing wrong with 2nd or third. Long term it is much better to be consistent high placing than always winning.

Jim: first time out with a new ride;
pulling with the folks that win or
place at the large venue multiple day
events; yes, I will be happy to be in
the top 3 or 4. I have been
fortunate enough to out pull all of
these guys at one time or another.
Have even won a class on rare
occasion. But to win against all
these folks is a HUGE
accomplishment. These are some of the
best in the Midwest. As stated
before: having a 15to 20% chance of
prize money beats 5%. As another
stated: consistent has its merits. I
won a points championship years ago
without winning a class all year. I
stand by my belief that ONLY paying 1
place is counterproductive.

Iam the same way. I go to have some fun and be with a bunch of guys that like to play around with tractors.
