IH 560 diesel big bore head gasket

Have any of you removed sleeves from an IH D282 diesel engine like the 560 diesel has and bored the block for larger pistons. I am looking at doing an engine but not sure how to seal the compression due to the small space between the cylinders. Do you get a machined ring to put into the counter bore or? Steel ring the head?

Yes you can take your block to a good machine shop and get a groove cut around the bores and then use a fire ring (stainless wire)
Do you take the Hook magazine? There is a few advertisers that will do this. There are adapter kits to put a 466 in.

I am looking for a light option for my 460 that I pull in the 4000lb open class. I like the cross flow head over the gas head and am looking at running the engine on gas.

At a pull last fall the announcer made a big funny. He said that a Farmall dipstick had been found on the scales. Everybody laughed because we all know that all of the Farmalls are Cummins powered.

As long as this is a NA application you would probably be okay with using a stock 301 Diesel head gasket from a combine because they have a bigger bore, but you would have to compare the bore after pulling the sleeves and match this to the stock 301 head gasket. I dont't think you could go any bigger on bore than 3.875 going this route and it probably wouldn't clean up the counterbore for the sleeves unless you make inserts to fill the gap. The other option is to start with a 301 diesel combine block, you probably could go to a 4 inch bore right of the bat. You still should add an oring groove in the head or the block to add to the sealing force around the cylinder.
The other option if you go to a bigger bore than the stock 301 gasket is to call Clark Head Gaskets in Texas(763-786-0402)and have a copper gasket made, you still should use the oring grooves going this route.
You can get them with or without coolant holes, if going without coolant holes you would have to reroute the water through the head.
It sounds like a fun project, good luck.

The angle valve truck head is supposed to flow better than tractor head. Got a buddy who is trying this on a 310 Oliver.

The late D282 block with the heavy press fit sleeves don't have much of a counter bore step, and the gasket ring did not seal on the sleeve, but was just outside the sleeve OD. Early blocks with the slip fit sleeve have the wide flange the gasket did seal on, holding the sleeves down too. With the sleeves out, block bore is 3.13/16 inch same as the standard D301 bore. If it's to be turbocharged, best rework block and head as needed with larger hardware as the head gasket is the weak point on diesels. They also have one less hold down bolt than gas blocks do.
