Can't you get that much off the piston tops? Shortening the rod angle is usually a bad idea with pulling engines, besides, the cost difference is big. gm
 
I would suggest doing something else. I know of some welded rods the stayed together. Others, done by the same person, did not last. Best to spend your money on the long term build. Not a time bomb. (Just my opinion)
 
I too would avoid welding. If you can't take it all off of the top of the piston maybe it would be possible to make some offset bushings to make up the rest.
 
can't get it off the top of piston don't know if I want to do this anyway just trying to use forged pistons that have no time on them 5.18 bore made for a 7" mm 403 trying to put them in a 6" mm 283 would have to go to 5 5/8 stroke to use them with farmall m or mm u rod unless I shorten them 474 vs 505 cubes
