New to pulling (ish)

Hello all. I have just acquired a 1949 John Deere A SN#636787.
I have been dead sled pulling a bone stock A most of my life with a 1951 A 6-speed.
The tractor I got is a high/low 4-speed...I think? I don't know where to start, it is missing alot of parts, it does not have a carb(suggestions?) It does not have an ignition system(suggestions?) The block was previously bored 45 over(I don't know what this means)
I would like to have a competitive tractor...I don't expect to get 100hp out of this motor, I would like to restore this tractor making it run amazing, with a little extra oomph....using as many of the parts it currently has, as possible.

You can do that and get it done, but just be aware going in that it takes a lot more money to do it with a 2 cylinder. Deere than with anything else.

I don't doubt I can do it...I am hoping I can get some suggestions as to what parts I should purchase (carb, ignition, Pistons, rings, manifold, exhaust)
I hope to bore this block up to 90 thousandths over....my concern is can I find a piston and rings set at that size? What does everyone suggest for machining the head to at this point? I'm not afraid to spend money, but I also don't want to kill my bank account either.

You get started down that road, and it can get tough to stop. How many cubes do you think those big bad Deeres are running? I pull with what is thought of as a big powerful 6 cylinder turbo diesel, but my displacement is less than half what those Deeres have. Getting fifty% more isn't bad, but then you find that you need more and so on. $$$$$$.

To be honest I have no idea what any of these tractor are putting out...I can tell you they are dead pulling a sled weighing 15,000lbs 16 feet with a 9000lb tractor in 2nd and 3rd gears and NOT starving for power by any means. I don't necessarily want to have a 20,000$ motor, but I would like half of what they have lol

Get ahold of one of these guys
Backburn 989 277 5366
Murphys 573 696 3655
Raml 605 359 2043
These guy build the big bad ones but can also get
you goin on a milder build, just figer out how much
you want to spend then double it !! Murphys motor
service has a nice web site that has prices

Thank you for the option, but the tractor I'll be restoring is actually my grandfather's that he would love to see running again. Worth a shot anyway!

Wait till you talk to Murphy's, to make
any decisions. I have seen a A pull in
the 6 mph class and win against as tough
of tractors as there are. Was supposed to
have 175 hp. So your A can run with the
big dogs. In our area you will need over
100hp to run farm stock 3 @ 4 mph and
win!.

Thanks for the confidence boost!
I did get ahold of Murphy's, he doesn't offer any service or suggest anything...he just sells parts....
Where I need the most help guys...is I do not understand how to decide what is the best route for boring...do I want steel caps installed? Should I go to the full 5.75" on the bore...if I do go that big on the bore, what should I have the heads shaved to? How do I figure out what size piston I will want...rings sizes? I know alllllof this matters...but I have no clue how to figure out the best combination.

(quoted from post at 17:08:52 09/05/17) Will do! I'm traveling west for work currently, once I get settled in I'll give him a buzz.

Theres more to an engine than cubes. Its seems to take a lot more cubes in a 2 cylinder to pull as fast as a 4 cylinder.
Don't be surprised if the road your interested in embarking on costs >$20k.
There's a reason I've decided to stay stock with my SM.

Alright guys, so I have got the tractor to the barn. I managed to find a carb on the previous owners property, it is a DTLX71... I here Roberts can turn any carb into a piece of art, so I'm going to send it to him...I also found a place to send my motor and get some "work" done???? however I do have a few questions maybe you guys can help with....
The current block on the tractor I noticed had a crack on the bottom of it(not into the cylinder) and someone welded it...my gut tells me by the time it gets bored out, it won't be any good...anyone have a suggestion as to where and how to match/find the appropriate block?
From there.....obviously taking everything apart, replacing bearings, gaskets, nuts bolts.....can anyone tell me what some major areas of concern that I should focus on?
Please note, I'm doing this ON MY OWN....
