Farmall 560 Cylinder Head

I have a 1958 Farmall 560 that I pull with. It does ok but I know I need to rebuild the engine. It appears to have the stock 263 gasoline block and head. I have ruled out putting a bigger engine in it, and I know I will be limited as to what I can do to that engine. My questions is what cylinder head will work best with my engine? A lot of people talk about small or closed chamber heads. Port and polishing also. Slanted cylinder head? Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

No other head will fit stock pistons. They used the open chamber head on the 460,560,660 and the pistons have a high dome.

In a word, yes. That's what I did on my last one. It's best if you can find a complete c301 engine to start with. Then you have the head & carb you need. A 715 combine engine is the best way to go. If you run it stock at stock 560 rpm you will get 75 hp. I built one with a bigger cam and just a little head work & got 93 hp and ran pump gas. Plus it could still be used if you wanted to. Later I bored it out to 3 15/16, ran flat top pistons, which upped my comp ratio to 10.6 to 1, & only got it up to 103 hp, and had to run 102-104 octane. If I had it to do over I would have stayed with the 93 hp. It's a lot less machine work and easy to do.

I have been thinking about building one also. I have a c301 from a 715, would I be better off with a SD or BD head or stick with 715 head? I want to use the stock pistons and use pump gas.

I myself don't known much about them. I think the silver diamond is the preferred. I also think you have to have the valve cover & maybe the push rods. The SD head has a higher flow rate than the 301 but I don't the numbers. I always thought it to be easier just to stay with the 301 head & do a little work to it. You guys need to keep in mind that I am cheap, lazy, and not very smart.

One more thing. Whatever you guys do have a cam ground. I think that is where you get the most bang for your buck. I enjoy helping if I can so just keep asking I will tell you what little I know.

I agree , freshen up the cam and followers . A multi angle valve job improves flow. As does blending the rough edges inside the ports and bowls. Ports should be matched to manifolds .

14-1 cr . will b key to that motor . if your running under 3,000 rpm use stock head . silver diamond head wont do you any good under 3,000 rpm .a good cam and carb is a must .run a bendix carb if you can its a great bolt on no modifications . I have a nos one if you need one . grind off the heat shield junk off your intake . there is a few bore & stoke combinations to do with off the shelf parts .

Back in the in late 70s played with a IH truck pulling 1959 A120 with BD 264 six. It was a high altitude engine had tall dome pistons from the factory. IRC they were same as c263 lp pistons. It was fun esp with nitros competed with big blocks
