I am very new to farmall/international tractors. I am typically a John Deere guy. I have come across a tractor that I used to see pulling when I was a kid. Wanting to buy it and turn it back into a puller. Its been sitting in a shed for 20yrs collecting dust. Looking to build it for a 5500-7500 open turbo class. The tractor is a 560 diesel. It used to pull with a turbo in the early 90's. But the guy who owns it also has a 666 for sale. The class i am looking to pull in has 410 cubic in limit, 2.25 turbo size, and no inline pumps. The 666 price tag is alot higher than the 560. How much different is there in the chassis and transmission between the two? I am some knowledge of the 560's diesel engine. I am not sure on the engine for the 666. According to tractor data the engine is D312. How close is it to the D360 in a 766? If they are close I have plenty of parts since I work at a bus garage and still run alot of buses with the DT360. Any help would be great. I would like to get going on this project so its ready by next pulling season.

I think the 312 and the 360 are the same block, not positive. I have a 360 in a 886 I will sell when I get time to take it out. It has coolant in the oil. I have a 414 to put in it.

Performance-wise the D312 will outperform the D282 by a long shot. The D360 is the "big brother" to the D312 and the parts can be interchanged to make the 312 into a 360. The 414. 436, and 466 are the "Daddy" to the 312 and 360. You can swap injectors, injection pumps and most external items between the family of engines.

The 560 has room for a bigger clutch than the 666, but you can put in a dual disc or greater to handle whatever power you decide to produce.

The 666 will also be a much easier swap if you ever decide to put a "400" series engine into it.

I would lean towards the 560. And put a 414/466 in it. (Do they really check them) or make it a 410. Reason is the head will flow more. There is Cams etc available. Also the American Bosch rotary pump is better than a roosamsster. For pulling. Bet you end up pulling against 640 cu. Motors. I hate rules they can't enforce.

if 560 has 282 turbod for pulling run away fast unless its cheap and your planning on putting a different engine in it. my 2 cents
