46 JDA primary reduction gears

I have a 46 A recently overhauled .45 over,
little head work runs, pulls ok, I have
heard of changing the primary reduction
gears out with 51-52 how much does it help I
know I'm geard faster that the pressed steel
frame A's

It will slow the tractor down by about 7.5%. The early A clutch/1st reduction gears are 36/86 teeth, and the late A/60 gears are 34/88 teeth.

Thanks Mike correct me if I'm wrong by slowing it down whith lower gears will it will up my power. And is it beneficial to pulling the sled I can weight up and never spin out but power out but just a few more feet could be the difference between 1st and second. Would it slow it down like the pressed steel frame A's with the straight six trans

changing the gears will give you 2.3 mph not the 1.5 like the jd60. a jdA speed is 2.5 in first unless it's a 39 or earlier which is 2.33 mph first gear. not much help .

If you are pulling a transfer sled you don't really want to go slower. Stone boat is a whole different animal where those low geared JD's do the best.
