Unstyled John Deere A Head

I have a 1937 Unstyled John Deere A, looking to get the head ported and polished. I am located in Ohio. Any suggestion on a shop? Also, what would be a ballpark price?

Thanks, Tyler

Murphys heads are nice but not cheap & really not needed unless you'r goin to significantly increase cubic inches. We have an unstyled A w/7.75 stroke & stock hd ported by Blackburn & it runs great.

Porting a stock head with a common intake runner is basically 8 hrs + the valve job. I had a 1951 Stock JD head done along with a performance 4 angle valve job and I can't say the tractor pulls any better than guys w/o a ported head. Heavy classes, the tractor pulls 2nd gear where theirs are in 1st, big deal, it still isn't blowing the 3-1/2 mph horn. In my case it wasn't worth the expense. On the other hand, my 644 cu-in JD A with Murphys parts pulls in 4th or 5th gear. I believe the ported stock head slows flow velocity to the extent the engine does not lug at real low rpms, just gives up. I've had the same experience w/racing engines, big ports in combination with limited cu-in, rpm, and induction, the motor lays down, no checkered flags. Put on a pr of smaller, limited port heads, and the car runs again.
