I have a 48 A and plan on milling the head and
gasket matching how far can I comfortably go and
what kind of compression and horsepower can I
expect I have .90 aluminum pistons and that's it

You may get more "Bang for your Buck" with lengthening the Connecting rods...

This way, you can get as much compression as you want..by Billing the Head, you may gain a Horse of 2 and that includes the .90" over-bore..

The JD "A" has so much area above the Piston a9at TDC) that just Milling the Head will at Best, raise your compression from 5.6:1 to 6:1

enough to think you have improved it ( and you have), but certainly not as much as you can use and still run on 87 Oct.fuel..
