With a farmall h trying to get some more ponies while I'm rebuilding. Is it worth while to get a 300 or 350 camshaft? Also I'm going to go overbore stepped head Pistons, should I keep the H head and polish it up or look for a 300 or 350 head? How much can a head be milled before contact with stepped head Pistons?

Easier to go to a custom cam grinder. Head can be polished and cut as much as .040" before running into clearance troubles, but .030" would be safer. Best way to tell is to mock it up and measure your clearance.

You can put fire craters in it and still mill of .100" off the head. I have thought about building a low cost H. If so I would start with a 350 engine as whole and put a reground cam in it. If you stay with the stock block then I would suggest a Super H, 300 or 350 head. They are all the same. I have found that many of the original cams are wore down so a reground is the best solution. Polishing, port matching are important. Also go with better carb. The Super H had basically the same carb as an M with a smaller venturi. If I ever do build and H it will have at least a Super H carb and maybe evenan M carb. I would have to test it out on the dyno to know for sure.

Also, how far you go really depends on your region and pulling organization.
I'm setting up a 1944 H for transfer sled pulling in 3500# class. I'm setting it up specifically for this club, and with that said, it wont do as good elsewhere.
In this club we pull a long chain. So I need a long hitch. Long chain pulls typically require less power. A stock H shouldn't have issues pulling 2nd gear in 3500# class at this club, so I don't need to do much to the engine. If I started doing too much to it, theres a certain point where it would be considered enhanced/modified. I don't want that.
Point in case: The specifics of your particular club will strongly influence what you need to do.

You are right about clubs they all have their rules. Around here you have to pull low gear with 18" max high draw bar. We have a 22" min. between center of
rear axle and draw bar pin and we pull a short chain.

And to add to what I said:
The specifics of your club and the competition you want to pull against. If you put an overbore kit with high comp pistons in an H, your likely ok to still pull "stock". Throwing in an LP head will put you on the edge, and much beyond that will throw you into the enhanced/modified classed.
So choose your competition in your club, and build to that.
