Massey 97 verses MM G1000

Never done any pulling before but might go along to local show this weekend with my 97 fwa (only 2 wheel drive will be used0. Just wondered if the Massey has any chance against a G1000, I know they have much the same power but he has power shift so can drop a gear when things get tough. What gear should I try? Can I get more fuel by adjusting fuel pump? Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.
Bill

No higher than second gear. Depends on traction, chain length, and tractor weight. You can get a bit more fuel, but you won't gain much power, the engine is limited by air intake.

Low gear is 3.3 mph in a 97 Massey and thats probably where you need to be...What size rear tires and what do you weigh? Years ago I saw some stock G-1000's pulling at 12,000 and 15,000 lbs and they ran 1st gear..

Over the years I've pulled a 445,M-5,M-670-G-900,G-705,GVI MM's that were pretty stock and 1st gear was all that they could horse it in.....I tried 2nd gear in several and killed them..I recently killed my GVI MM at a pull in 1st gear weighing 8000 lbs with 18.4x34's...

Now if you had the 97 Massey puller thats pictured above you could possibly run road gear...The "Misfit" was pulled from 1980-84 by the Hoffer family from Ewing,Missouri....It was the only 97 Massey Super Stock puller that I'm aware of...I think it pulled at 7000 and 9000 lbs....I got to see it pull 5-6 times..

Thank you for the reply, I went to the show but didnt try out the 97 on the sledge, maybe next time. The guy with the G1000 did though but when he ran out of power and down shifted the gear didnt engage so I guess he has an issue with the torque amp. He also has a White 2270 which got a little farther than the MM. Various requests were made for me to take the MF 2805 to the sledge but that 24 speed is just too vulnerable for me to take the chance.
Have you a turbo fitted to your 705?
Bill

Never had a turbo on any of the MM's that we owned over the years...The 705 LP burner was bought in the mid 1970's to be made in to a turboed 7000 lb Super Stock tractor but never was built...We pulled it a few times in the 9000 lb stock class and it never ran out of power...

When pulling our MM's I tried shifting down the Ampli-torc a few times but with a 40% drop in speed it just didn't work...It would just spin put..You are pretty much stuck in high 1st on a stock 2 speed MM..
