4010 Head Options

Its getting to be time to go over the injectors and valves on the 4010. Before I sink a bunch of money into the original head I wanted to check to see what some other options are. Read that the late model 4020 head is preferred as a bolt on as it has slightly larger valves. Mixed reviews on the pencil injectors vs the big ones. Is it worth an extra $500 to make this change or would I just be better off to send current head out to have big valves and ported?

The other option I was reading up on was a 55 series head. I know valve clearance to sleeve is an issue and you have to cut them down some. Anyone have pictures of this? Hard to get right? What about water and oil passage alignment between the head and block, any issues there? Which head gasket, assuming one from a 404 to match the bore? Then I would have to find or have a set of lines made to run between the pump and whatever injectors come in it. Didn't find a lot of information on this topic so I am assuming it is possible but not done too often.

Running a 0.370 pump no turbo.

Thanks

The 4020 pencil head will bolt on but the rear oil passages don't line up. You'll have to stick with the 4010 head or come up with a different block.

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The 4010 and early 4020's used a wider deck on the block because they used barrel lifters and you could remove them from the top. The later blocks went to mushroom lifters and at some point they moved the oil supply to the head and narrowed up the block and head accordingly.

The trouble with using a later head is it won't seal the lifter gallery. The trick I've heard about is to use a 4520 block, 55 series head bolts right on and with big sleeves valve to sleeve clearance is not an issue. Keeps the pump in the correct location, at a glance most people would never know.

There's a local fellow here who's running a set of custom lines with a set of modified KDEL injectors, injector nozzle options are much better.
