I have seen some guys talking about putting a JD 466 bottom end in a 404 and using a 466 head on the 404 as well. has anybody done this and does it work good.

You sure they weren't talking about the IH dt466 bottom end in 414/436 blocks? The Deere engines use the same stroke between the 404 and 466, changing the bore from 4.25 to 4.5625. The IH engine uses the same bore with different strokes.

The later Deere cranks had some changes and updates throughout the years. The early 404 cranks, 4010/4020 used two dowls for alignment and 4 bolts, the next change was to add a boss in the center to pilot and center the flywheel with one dowl for timing mark alignment, still 4 bolts. At some point during the 30 series tractors the thrust bearing design was changed from a one piece thrust to the multiple piece bearing. I believe the next big change occurred when the 466 came out, 6 bolts on the crank, crank oil hole drilling was changed, mains were cross drilled for oiling the rods all the time and lower main bearing shell was changed from fully grooved to partially grooved at the parting line. Previous fully grooved mains would wear the crank with a bump in the center. The next change came when they moved the oil pump to be crank drive and added a weld on gear to the crank.
