I'm in the process of building a ford 5000 standard tractor. I just acquired a 268 turbo motor. Anyone pull or pull against one of these in the #5500 class? What size tires am I gonna be the most competitive? Will be pulling #5500-7500 farm stock and tough farm classes. Any info on this would be appreciated, I'm brand new to a ford.

Don't mess around with that 268, put a 401 in it, then put it on a diet and get it under 5,000 lbs. I can't find my Firestone book but you could go 16.9 38s or 34s. I expect that the 38s would be lighter. Go big or go home!!

You might check with clubs that put on pulls in your area and see what size tires they will let you use. I know in our area in farm stock classes they have max tire size and you can't run any cut tires.

keep the 4 cyl,id think no farm stock would let ya use a 6 cyl,id be seriously looking for the ford 304,same dimensions as the 256-268.18.4-38 is a very good tire for that weight, theres lots of ring and pinion ratios available for the 5000,also aftermarket gears too, should be hard to beat in a farm "stock" type 55-75 wt

I second look for a 304. Injection pump needs to be reworked also. I still run a 268 and am having trouble keeping up with the Genesis motors. The head is much better also.

Like others have said the 304 would be better than the 268 but you can still get good power out of the 268. We pull a row crop 5000 select o speed some. It's still the 256 with a 9600 turbo and stock pump turned up all it will go. It is very competive in our areas 6500 and 7500 5mph farm stock. Beat several 4010/20's with 466s in them. It all about how far you want to go. There is a 5000 from Washington, MO with the 304 in it and a p pump that usually makes passes at 20+ mph at 5900 lbs

Yes,Watermans 5000 Ford from Washington,MO with a 304 in it flat runs..Heres another 5000 with a 304 that runs good....Theres several videos of it..
