Good evening, I'm attending a tractor pull (stone
boat) this weekend and possibly pulling my allis
d17. I've never pulled before. Anty tips for a newbie
would be greatly appreciated

Get your drawbar as short as possible and up as high as allowed by the rules. Also bolt your twisted pulling clevis SOLID so it can't sag. Get in as light of weight class as possible. A well tuned D-17 should be able to pull low 2nd gear up to 6,000 lbs as a rule.

we entered a tractor pull one time an pulled twice first the draw bar in the regular way then turned the drawbar over an pulled a lot farther good luck

If possible take your tractor to a scale, such as at a quarry, and weigh it so that you know where you are starting. I have seen many guys come out for the first time and be unable to make the weight class that they planned on, and end up being the lightest in their class by four hundred pounds. You will be hooking against guys with their tractors perfectly balanced for their class. If you can get any components "preloosened" so that you can remove them easily when you get there it can be a big help. If you have no weights to add you will likely be "nose heavy" If this is the case, sliding your draw bar OUT can help you to get more draft from the boat. A lot depends on the length of the chain. On a short chain, (four feet) you may need to add to the front to keep it down, while on a long chain, (12 feet) you will want it all on the back along with draw bar out.

You might see if you could get the rules for the classes your pulling in. It will tell you what you can do to tractor. You might need to drop tire pressure depending on track ( 8 to 12 lbs. pressure).
