new guy with ? for the 2 cyl guys

My first time posting but I have been reading a lot of old posts and I must say there's a lot of very intelligent people on here.
I have a JD 60 that I'm gonna build over winter just for pulling (tired of getting beat by them olivers). My question is, has anyone ever used the block and head from a 630 along with a 9" crank? I was just brainstorming this the other day and thought that the 630 head would be a better candidate for running higher compression.
Also anyone know how far you bore a 630 block? Can it be sleaved to 6 or 6.250? T.I.A.
 
Olivers are pretty light. Probably need to
start with a old A then put your sheet
metal on it. I would start with a after
market block. As big as you can get. Josh
or Ray can fix you up. Around here the
Olivers are 400 cu. In Farm Stock. So you
will need to be 600+. Just a thought Vic.
 

You can find Blocks with 7" Bores (or larger) made for your 60..

To REALLY be competitive, you will also want many Aluminum (weight-saving) pieces, so you can move more toward the front, ect, ect..(that may even include the Radiator, Platform and a "Flat-Back" and more)..

A Performance Cam will be Mandatory...and much Head/Valve work..

I was even thinking maybe a guy could use a Murphy's block for a 60 and omit the spark plug holes and use the 630 head. Like I said, just brainstorming a little.
We don't have much for rules other than tire size, so I can do pretty much anything. I appreciate the replies, keep em coming.
 
An A would make the same power & be much lighter. As others have posted, get ahold
of a reputable builder, they know what works & what doesnt work. Getting it done over
winter might be a stretch if you want big ci & hp. Check out the photo adds, theres a
couple deere pullers for sale that might be the way to go if you want to be pull'n by
spring. Whats the tire size limet & weight class you plan on pull'n ? mph ?

'm hoping to get it down to 5000. Limited to 15.5's in 5000 & 6000. We pull both open speed and paced. Paced is 3,4, and 5 depending on weight.
 
How does the pace change depending on weight idea work? Guess i've never seen that.
Do the class's jump by #1000? If so, an unstyled A would be the way to go. You can
pull#4000, #5000 & 6 instead of just 5 & 6,000. Alot of work & $$ for just 2 hooks w/a
60.
 
5000 paced is 3 mph, 6 would be 4, and 7 is 5. But we also pull them classes as open speed as well. So in all I would get 6 hooks. Right now I pull a 630 in 8000 paced at 8 mph, and I usually place in the top 3 but it is not a popular class. 8500 is a lot more popular but you pull against turbo diesel tractors.
 
sell your JD and buy a oliver you could build 2 olivers for the money you would stick in that deere but that is just my 2 cents, but i like the deeres too dont get me
wrong they are nice tractors,too play with but if you want a puller go with a oliver
 
How many people would come.to.watch.a.tractor pull if everyone pulled an Oliver? I'm not pregidous, but that would be boring to watch.
The average class size for my area is about 15 tractors per class. In that 15 there there will be 8 Oliver's , 5 MM , and a couple farmalls.
 
620/630 blocks are thicker than 40As thru 60s so will go 5.75. Unstyled A's are close to 5.75 up front bore 5.75 real nice and then you have a straight bore. If your looking for something that runs good but gives you room to move weight around I would build an unstyled A. Currently have one bored to 5.875 but then you need a block that's clean in the water jacket i.e. minimal pitting.
