880 OLIVER RPM'S PULLING

Hi, I have question regarding my RPMs and how to adjust. The motor has been worked over and pulls really strong. It was only ever on the dyno once when it was first born 5 years ago and ran about 110hp at 2300ISH RPMs. My question is we are going to redyno it and can I twist some more RPMs to see if we get more peak HP. If so is the linkage spring giving me my RPMs or is it in the governor. How can I adjust. thanks !

Yes you pull on it to rev it up. So just pull harder on it. Or put a wire Along it so at the very last you pull the carb wide open. And the governor can't slow the engine down. Illegal. A stronger spring is better.

You can run a zip tie thru about 4 or 5 loops of the spring then tighten the Ziptie
little at a time while checking rpm. May have to use more than one ziptie. When
you get what u want you might replace zipties with wire.

The centrifugal weights inside act to attempt to override the spring outside. Tightening the spring makes it harder to do and thus increases rpm.

Actually Vic, lightening the weights is better for increasing RPM. This also has the effect of reducing the internal forces and corresponding friction. However, this is somewhat difficult so most people just crank up the spring force...

I agree. But is a balancing act. Get the weights to light and they don't have the force to pull the butterfly back evenly. And you get a tractor that is almost impossible to launch. Saw it last week. Mean WC gov flew open, wheelied, gov shut, came down hard. On the 3rd time battery came loose, jerked cable off,(good thing) bent weight bracket, weights fell off. Let me get 2nd instead of 3rd.

On my 770 I cut 7 rings out of the spring and regent the end in the vice. The long flat
linkage rod to that has to either be cut or like I did I flipped it around and used the
second hole in on it. Then I turned the governor to carb linkage out until I got the revs I
wanted. This part is the time consuming part bc you have to shut the tractor off to
adjust otherwise the butterfly will peg open. I run a lot of revs this way. There is also a
small 7/16 bolt on the front of the governor. Turn in to limit travel in to allow more top
end power, turn out to let it even out and bring rpms down. I had the original governor
come apart but it wasnt perfectly balanced for the 3300 revs I was running. New one is
much better.
