Home made suit case weights

Im going to make suit case weights from plate steel using 100# IH small handle weights as a template. How thick of steel should I use if I want them to be 50#?

To find out how much steel plate weighs.
Length x Width x Thickness x .28 = weigh
This will get you close. Don't forget to subtract for cut outs.
I convert all measurements to inch. Example 24"x 24" x 1/2"x .28 =80.64 lbs.
I hope this helps you. Al

1/2 inch is 30 pounds and 1 inch is 60 pounds and that is using the 90 pound weight with the big handle as a template.

The ones I have are made from 3 pieces of 5/16", and weigh exactly 50 lbs each. Easy to handle, and two of them are the same thickness as one IH weight. A guy near me
sells them for .80 per pound.
