JD H or JD M/MT/40

Looking to make a smaller farm stock puller for my boy. Narrowed my choices down to the 4 tractors in the subject line. Anybody have any expierences with one or another. What is the better one in your opinion? Does one have better and or more available pulling parts/engine upgrades? Will be a narrow front so it will fit on the trailer with mine if that matters

With stone boat pulling;
The 40 will be the best bet. I think they are around 23hp stock, and have a first gear speed of about 1.6mph.
The H will probably prove to be underpowered at only 15 hp and I think around 2.5mph first gear.
The M/MT are is the predecessor of the 40, so you only stand to lose HP with the M/MT.

With a transfer sled the H could be the best bet with the fastest first gear but you'd need massive engine work get the right power out of it. When it comes to stone boat pulling, speed doesn't really matter but with transfer sled pulling it makes a big difference.

Hi Bill I agree with all that has been said. A 40 or like models are the best choice, they more modern in design.
They will better respond to engine work and RPM changes. You have a distributor which gives you a few more opinions. The drawbar opinions are wider in these models too. There are likely more tire opinions too. Tricycle model. Have fun.

Think you will have to get serious to make a Mt. 430 competive. But I think it could be done. Head design is not bad. But just 100 inches. 420 is a little bigger but not much. But 4 5/8 X 6 would make it twice as big. With a 14 to 1 compression. A newer can and 14.9 X 38 tires would surprise a few. Can make 1st faster with a 435- 440 ring and pinion. can also slow 2nd down with 1010 parts. I have all this wrote down somewhere. Have fun what ever you do.

Why not a B? Alot more after market & custom parts for pulling available & alot more hp potential. Plus there cheap & plentiful to buy.

I think would need to stroke it. Go big right off. Just two rods to buy. Then maybe BB Chevy or Ford pistons. Should find them used. Send crank to hapco at Terre-Haute In. Fast turn around. There is a lot of cam grinders. But you will need a 3000 rpm cam. A RV grind for a Small Block would be about right. If really serious change the exhaust ports with the intakes. Problem all those things makes a 4 cyl run great also. Like the 50 Massey. It makes 85 HP.

(quoted from post at 01:42:51 07/20/15) Our club runs 2.75 mph speed limit. How serious would I have to get to run that fast and not power out?

You'd have to get pretty serious. Ultimately you have to ask yourself if the juice is worth the squeeze. In stock stoneboat pulling I see 420's do very well in 3500# class 1st gear.

The M has a weak crank and rods that will grenade when revved up.
A 420 is actually useful for pulling and other jobs. A five speed with live pto is a good find. There was even was optional SCV's.
If you look around for a late 440 gasser industrial. The engine in those was factory souped up. Well above the 420/430 engine to keep up with the 440ID's 2-53 Detroit.
