13.6-38 vs 15.5-38

This topic may have been covered before, but I am wondering what you all prefer for certain classes. Will the smaller tire pull better in the lighter classes while the bigger tire pulls better in the heavier classes? With my H I pull 4500-6500 and I'm having trouble deciding which tire size to go with. I heard 14.9-38 is taller than 13.6-38 and 15.5-38 so I don't want to go with That because I don't think I'll have the power to turn them and In a heavy class.[/list]

I have never done any good with a 13.6 tire. All I pull now is a 14.9 on my 400 LP or a 15.5 on my F-20. If I remember you have a low gear H and a guy around here pulls 15.5 all the way to 7500# with no power issues.

Pulled 1953 SM in stock class [10% allowance or RPM] 13.6 by 38 old TT Goodyears
This was indoor pull in April about 10 yrs ago.
Pulled 5000 and 5500 ....only original wts allowed...1st gear.

The ducks were all in a row that day! At 5000 1st place...14 tractors.

5500...2nd place again about 14 tractors about half were like mine , had also pulled at 5000.

So I was out pulled by one tractor in the two classes. And no one had smaller tires than I did.
The tractor out pulling me at 5500 was a 550 Cockshut diesel.

What a day !!! John

PF, I looked it up for you in my Firestone Data Book. THese are the circumferences: 13.6-180, 14.9-190, 15.5-184. Looks like the 15.5 will take less power than the 14.9.

Where do 12.4's line up in that? That's what I had.

All depends on the track! I have been pulling in 4500-5000&5500 for years with 3/4 worn 12.4 F&Roads. We use NATPA rules in our club. Have won points several years in 5000 & 5500 pulling against 13.6 most of the time. Pounds per square inch and balance can sometimes win over tire size , but sometimes not. Not an exact science. IMHO this makes this a sport! Have Fun!

The only 12.4x38 that I found is a SAT. The circumference is 180

So I located a Farmall M tractor with 15.5-38's in very good shape. They are on 15" wide rims. Bolted to the cast centers. It comes with 8 wheel weights and a bracket that bolts on the cast centers.
We were going to buy more wheel weights anyways, so this buy will take care of all that. I dont feel like pulling the M now, maybe sometime in the future.
What I want to do with the M is take my loader off of my International 300 and mount it on the M. Probably going to sell the 300.
