Shiming an oliver 77 rear end,

Hello I noticed a noise in my rear end and pulled the floor pan to inspect. While i was in there i noticed that the diff gears where not at factory spec. I want to shim it back but I have also read about guys shimming it tight to make it kinda like a limited slip. I was wondering how tight do you shim it? Are there any wear issues or maneuvering issues once it shimmed? Does this help that much when it comes to pulling?

When I have talked about shimming one tight. I managed to get the new shim and the old shim in the spider gears. More important is the condition of your shafts. They need to be in new condition and the spider gears fit to them. I have seen a lot of tractors spin one wheel wildly at the end. First thing they think they need a posi-traction rear. My neighbor who pulls a unlimited 4 engine tractor. puts needle bearings in his spider gears. And they don't last all season. Even with 12000hp needs to steer with the brakes. Vic

you need to understand how a oliver rearend is set up , the spider gears and bull pinion gears are shimmed at the same time not hard to do just need to know what you are doing , as far as a posi. rear end ? i use my brakes top steer all the time
