Super W6 eng overhaul

Hi everyone, I just overhauled my sw6 with a basic in frame kit. over bore pistons sleeves (4 1/8) with step head pistons. First question is what should timing now be set at? (magneto dist) I've heard manifold and carb from a 450 helps with power? Any other little tricks? Going to do some pulling at local meets, its just for fun , I'm only serious about having fun not winning. Thanks for your input, Ron.

I'm pretty sure you tune the new engine just like you did the original. I built up a Super M the same way 30 plus years ago and was told then to set it up like a stock engine as far as timing and carburetor adjustments. I imagine 450 parts would give it a little more "boost" in power, but I didn't have them for my tractor back then and I got a pretty good boost in power anyway I thought, up to 56 with the bigger sleeves and fire crater pistons. I've heard too that there are different venturies you can put in the stock carburetor, but I never tried that either. I've found in pulling weight placement or distribution and tire pressure and condition about as important as power...providing you have "decent power" of course. I think you'll find that very important in a W-6 with their smaller diameter wider tires compared to the M's and most of the others you'll be pulling against.

Thanks for the reply. I found out that back in the day of the original IH firecrater pistons, IH spec was 22 deg timing instead of 30-40 deg (total adv at wot)depending on eng bore. So I backed mine up and it sure makes a difference. I have not had it on a dyno yet but the eng sounds like it is running free not laboring all the time. Thanks again!!
