Can pulling tires be too wide( or tall)?

If tires are too large will they "not bite" and just float on top.?
Is there a minimum ground pressure needed for traction?

I run a 4320 JD in 10500 to 12500 lb field stock class. 4 mph ish. Run what ya brung.
Currently the tractor has 18.4-34 bias tires 90% tread.
I do ok but always spin out 20 to 30' short of first.
I feel these are too small and want to upgrade to  18. 4 or 20.8 -38 bias or maybe radial.  The 18.4 would be better for field work, but I am looking
to pull.

Should I look at 18.4 42 ?
Will radials pay off at 4 to 5 mph.?

Thx
Ken

For the equal amount of square inches of tread on the ground. A tall narrow tire will often out pull a low wide tire. All other factors identical.

you said the answer in your post,90% is way way too much tread, get some worn out 30% tread old hard tires, put some air in em and get near the top next hook.

I ran into the same thing with a 4430. The taller the tire the faster you will go. Do you pull in different speed limits or is 4mph max? Wider tires seem to help in clay that is real bity, but in loose dry sand they hurt. I would find a nice set of 20.8-38 with 25-50 percent tread.

Tracks here are dampened clay. Usually a little soft.
I pull in third gear, so can gear down if the tires get taller. Speed supposed to be as fast as the flag man can walk, but new this year is a radar speed meter and horn. Hear the horn and slow down. They're worried about breaking the old sled.

On the same tractor, the 18.4s would have more weight per sqr inch contact than the 20.8s but the total "bite" may be similar.?

Still leaning toward the 20.8 for larger foot print.

yea, your 20.8-38 is going to be a bit wider than the 18.4-38 and is taller which would make tractor faster.20.8-38 is usually factory mounted on a 2" wider rim than the 18.4-38
