Wide vs skinny tires

With the height being equal, I'd appreciate opinions on wide vs skinny tires.
I have 11.2-38's on my H now. I am considering stepping up to 13.6's next year. On the other hand, do these skinny tires typically pull better on hard tracks?
My H has the gearing to turn bigger tires.

I was running 13.6's on my puller and was getting beat by guys running 12.4's, so mounted a set of 12.4's on 10 inch rims and run them this summer and they did great, I'm thinking I will leave them on for next year. But I did not pull any rock hard tracks this year.

Narrow is better on softer tracks, wide on harder moist tracks.
But air pressure has a lot 2 do with performance of either one.

Come on guys. Why would you have tire size limits if bigger wasn't better! You let me run 50's and I will win 99.99% of the time. Vic

Does wheel speed have anything to do with the width of the tire? I have seen pretend farmer pull and he is just creeping along. Other tractors that pull where I pull have narrow tires and they use low gear and go slow. Tractors with wide tires seem to use a higher gear. This is for stone boat pulling.

At the Hudson Mills pull in the light class? If so, it might be worth bearing in mind that the top tractors were around 220%.

At the same time, I"m not saying that smaller footprint tires don"t or can"t win their share of pulls. I"ve won a couple over the years where, based on tire size, I shouldn"t have stood a chance of winning.

I think 12.4-38's on the standard rims are just about right on a
H that is still pretty much stock.......If you've got more power
from say, a 300 or 350 engine then 13.6-38's would be
needed. Newer H's in our area came with 11-38's and they
were just right IMHO.

Vic, Dad won the 4500lbs class at Vanderburgh last year with 13.6s. Also got a 2nd at Elnora against 18.4s with the same tire. I beat 18.4s on a regular basis when I pull modified. If the rules allowed you to run 24.5-32s would you? I think once you get into the faster heavier classes the bigger tire will win 8/10 times.

Yes I would if I could afford them! And monday I saw another creeper gear 720 JD win. He did have a good pair of 18.4 X 38's.

(quoted from post at 03:24:37 09/02/14) Vics,------YOU R WRONG !!!!!!!!!! Depends on several things, speed, power, track, class, ect. DAH.

Maybe you meant Duuuuuuh not DAH.

Go ahead and put the biggest tires you can get on a 3500 pound tractor. Use up all your moveable weight with rubber and get beat when your lookin at the sky. Yes the tire limits are there for a reason but there are factors that make it not the most appealing to go bigger.

would like too go to more but got too many irons in fire ,the last time i seen a pair of 12.4x38 win was about 8 years ago and it was on a limestone track

I won 6500# stone boat a month ago against two farmall M's two JD A's an Oliver 880 and a JD B with 12.4-38's. By far the smallest tires.

you are not even in the ballpark, talking thousands of lbs difference in wt.he asked about a very light wt. tractor.
