Is the muffler supposed to be silver/grey in color, or were they black. I have seen a lot of both on show tractors.

All the ones I saw as a kid were Aluminized. Can picture a bran-splinter new Super M Our next door neighbor got. My uncle's M did have the small pipe out the top. Not the big one like the mufflers have now. Vic

All the later models had the aluminized silver mufflers. The postwar models and later ones had the smaller outlet pipes, but when the Super M's came out with the larger diameter outlet pipes most all the replacement mufflers had the larger pipe too. Before about 1944 the mufflers were sort of stubby things with a short outlet pipe, the earliest ones were black IIRC. I remember when the seat covering was dark gray the mufflers were dark gray too. I get this from recalling how my uncle's '41 H was.....I was 7 when he got that.......traded an Avery Ro-track in on it at Leutheuser IH at Somerset, Michigan in April 1941.......the Avery had blew it's rear end the third time and the Avery Co. People couldn't fix it 'cause they were going out of business.
