Can someone explain how
this works

Actually it's stone "boat" or sledge used to pull dead weight or used in a people pull, go to youtube and look up both. It's fun to watch the 2,the spectators are involved in the people pull.

Basic idea is be the last man pulling. 2 different kinds weight class style or percentage style. Both kinds run in the same manner . Start with a certain amount of weight and pull. When everyone pulls they add a block (usually 500 lbs) and you pull again. You also have 2 attempts to make a full pull. Class is finished with the top 3 tractors can't make a full pull.
