I"m trying to set the valve lash on my ta and I will go to one of the cylinders and turn engine until both valves are closed and set lash. Then will turn the engine to where one valve is open and one is closed and the one that is closed gives a completly different gap than what I just set it at, a bigger gap. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I do have a new roller rocker arm that doesn't have any slack in it. Should I set gap when one is closed and one is open? Thanks

Set em with both valves closed and piston up on compression. Take all the plugs out, turn engine and watch the rockers, exhaust will open, then intake, then the piston will be coming up on compression, set em with piston on top of compression stroke.

sometimes its best to go over everything 3 times. ive had that happen too. i check em both ways. one open one closed, and both closed. i shoot for .017 hot.

The absolute best way to make sure you have them set correctly is to put one valve in a cylinder on it"s full open position and set the one closed. This way you don"t have to worry about valve over lap.

adjust intake valve when exhaust valve just opening. adjust exhaust valve when intake valve is just closing . This method will put adjusted valve or lifter at the very backside or heal of cam . I follow firing order for the intake first then do the exhaust,Paul

Turn the engine over until a cylinder is on valve overlap. Turn until you feel that you are at equil overlap of both inake and exhaust valves. Now go to the other cylinder that is on the same throw of the crank and set both valves for that cylinder.

If you are working on your 4 cyl M and you have cylinder #3 on valve overlap, set the valves on cyl #2. If cyl #1 is on overlap, set the valves on cyl #4. This way you know that you are on the base circle of the camshaft for the cylinder you are adjusting. 1 & 4 are a pair, 2 & 3 are a pair unless you have a special crankshaft.

Of course 6 cyl engines are different. 1 and 6 are paired, 2 & 5, 3 & 4.

If you do the one valve full open, set the other valve of that cylinder method like someone above posted, they will still be different depending on your cam profile and lifter diameter, it will not be on true base circle and give an erroneous reading.
