John Deere B No Torque

I"ve been pulling a 40 john deere B this year after completely rebuilding the engine last winter. It seems to be really low on torque, running out of power about 50 feet shorter than everything else in the class with a couple other B"s. It has a little faster first gear than the other b"s but it last weekend a MM Z but about 75 feet on it and ran about the same speed. It also has aluminum compression pistons and I was wondering if I would be better off with the heavier cast iron pistons? Any other advice would help.

Is the gov adjusted properly? Also I would check the cam timing. I rebuilt my A and it was lazy as he!! . Took it to a friend josh Blackburn to find both of the above things wrong. Previous owner scanned it together.

I have a 40- B set up the same as yours low on power I went to a K&N air filter just turn elbow over get one to fit it. And went to sparkplug adapters to use 14mm car plugs this gave a lot more power will pull 4000lb class now, if its a power track power gets low sometimes but still in top of the class.

You will only pull half as hard as a stock Z , & half as hard as a later B with the low first gear. Your 1st is the same as his 2nd. Put a late B in 2nd & it's weak if it's stock. Also the later B's had 10hp (1/3 more) over yours from the factory. Yours is rated 18 hp. The lighter pistons take less power to move back & forth so they leave more power to turn your wheels. Cast pistons are only good to tie ropes to & go fishing. (Boat anchors) also, most (stock ) tractors are far from stock.

Mine isn't bone stock. It's bored to 4.875 which is the same as a late b and has all the same internals as a late b. It's ported and polished and has a dltx 71 carb and fresh mag.

my 39 B was the same way. i found it ran better with the B carb on it. The A carb was too much for the stock stroke and minimal bore change. There was also an improvement when I replaced the mag with a distributor and the insert for car plugs. Even with those chages, I still was back of the pack. So, added an inch of bore, inch of stroke, a cam and pull DIV III. It does pretty well.
