I have a 45 JD A can you machine down a styled a head to make it a flat head or if not how much can you take off. Thanks for any info.

Quite a bit of stock can be removed from a styled JD A head, at least 3/16" but never to a flat combustion chamber.
The total cyl/head volume is just too large for the relatively small reduction in head volume, stock is around 180cc, after removing 3/16 it is still approx 145cc. Since the 5-1/2" dia piston at TDC remains .75" down in the bore, there just isn't enough change by milling the head to make a dramatic difference.

All that does is weaken the already crack-prone head rendering it in search of a rope (boat anchor). Longer rods or taller pistons, or buy a flat head, or both.

Put your milling money towards a heisler head(if you
can find one) or maybe better yet, just bite the
bullet and get a Murphys head. At some point you
will most likely want one anyways. You'll be glad
you did. Seriously.

A Murphy head is WAYYY too big for your engine. But Extreme Tractor Parts makes an excellent one for your application. By the time you buy a Heisler & go through it you're at $15-1800 anyways. The new head will add 12-15 hp itself. Which is around 1/3 more.

But you will send your money to Extreme, and then wait for an unknown time for the product and have to go thru hell and high water to get it or if lucky, your money back. Murphys. The head will work.

Can we vote? Mine goes with the cylinder head from Hallsville, MO.

Too bad somebody doesn't make a wedge head with a quench in the combustion chamber. Considerably superior detonation resistance.
Is there eyebrows around the intake valves on those?
