4020 Gas build help

Darned Deere

New User
Has anyone ever built a john deere 362 gas for a NA class. Class has a 410ci limit. Curious if the propane intake or exhaust manifolds offer any advantage also. Looking for ideas for this build. Thanks in Advance

Never messed with the gas engines, always diesels.
I would not use the gas engine as a base to build from. I would start with a diesel block and build from that. 4 mains vs. 7 mains. Also if you started with a diesel it would be 404 to start out with.

Any other rules for your class? Rpm limit? Weight? Speed limit?

A de cubed 466 with a spark plug 55 series head would be the
ticket but No conversions or engine updates are allowed
open rpm open speed 7000 farm stock

Dumb question:
Would a 404 diesel crankshaft fit in a gas block?

341 gas - 4.25 bore x 4.00 stroke

362 gas - 4.25 bore x 4.25 stroke

404 diesel - 4.25 bore x 4.75 stroke

I remember seeing a post on pulloff about someone that did that. The only challenge I see is oiling the rods that are on the mains that aren't supported.

If I were building it I would look at the external differences in the block, dr the casting number up a little bit and go from there.
If the rules were stock appearing I would use a 4520 block, that way you can use a late model spark plug head with some mods so the valves clear the liner.

Back when I changed a 4010 LP to gas. I had to wrap the neck of the intake manifold with 3/8 copper tubing and run by-pass water through it. It would ice up bad. But I was sure it had more power. When you build this motor. up the compression to diesel numbers! Compression is the name of the game, in a NA motor. If you can build a tubing manifold this would be better. A good speed-shop can acidize your manifold inside and make a world of difference. Did you say no rpm limits! Then the sky is the limit. And you would need to start with a 7 main block from a diesel.
