widening rims what is the best way?

I need my rim 4" wider and they are steel stamps with no ribs. Is it better to over lap in the inside by the tube or the outside? What is the trick to cutting these straight and where is the best spot to cut? Plasma or torch? Any pictures would be great.

Leave the wheel on the tractor and set the plasma on a stand (I use a saw horse) to keep it steady. Spin the wheel around, getting a nearly perfect cut. The best way I've done a set was to split another rim and make 2 wide rims out of 3 good rims. I've also had steel rolled, but that's 2 welds per rim where splitting a third rim only leaves you one weld per rim.

I am not a metal fabricator but here are a few thoughts...

if you cut an outer lip off each rim and you had another (spare) rim greater than 8 inches wide you could cut it so the out lip on the spare rim is 4 inches wide and then you could add a 4inch piece to each of your rims and have only one welded bead on each rim versus 2 beads of weld for the 4 inch plate on each side.

Hope this helps, probably not worded the best but if you have questions just ask.

you need an extra rim for each one you want wider. one cut on each rim. you will be using the second rim welded to the first one that has been cut.

No plasma. You can split the rims quite successfully and quickly with a narrow cutoff wheel in a mini-grinder and when done your weld prep is done.
