Re: Tractor pulling

I have a 1948 Model UTS M.M.I am wondering if it would make a decent pulling tractor. The rear tires are loaded now and it weighs 6800 lb. If I drain the fluid and add weights I could get in the 6500 lb class. What else could I do. Thanks Larry Milligan On Canada

the Minneapolis-Moline tractors are easy to make into strong pullers. It depends on where you pull; the sled; track; chain length; and other factors as to what kind of horsepower you will need in order to be competitive. It is fairly easy to get a UTS to near 5000#. This allows for being able to place suitcase weights where you need them to balance it in 5500#. You need to talk with "locals" to determine how strong of a tractor you will need to compete. A stock U series with 4209 heads (quite common) will go 45hp or so. Higher compression heads; overbore kits; lp manifolds; etc will enable you to go 80-90hp without starting the custom machine work. I have been pulling a long time; We have very strong tractors in this area. I have never had any power problems with a U pulling thru 7000-7500# using parts that are designed for a U. Also; the standard models are usually geared a bit faster than the others. I am referring to a low gear or "stock" pulling class. Using parts suggested by M&W or listed by M-M as available for a U. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!
