John Deere 404 to 466 engine swap

Hello, I have a John Deere 4040 tractor that I am looking to swap the old 404 motor out of it with a 466. The old 404 has around 15,000 hours, and very tired. I have a friend who has a 466, inter cooled engine he wants to sell out of a 4640. I'm sure somebody has done a swap like this, any problems you encountered along the way? Will the powershift tranny hold up to this? How much retrofitting will I have to perform with the tinwork? Any help or tips is appreciated. Thanks in advance for any input.

Should be a pretty well bolt in deal. 1st thing I would check is the bolt holes in engine block where it bolt thru the frame. The 404 is 1/2" NC, make sure the 466 is the same way, I think some 4640 and 4840"s are 5/8" NC which would require modifying the frame which prob would not be worth it as a 4440 engine would be more of a direct bolt in. Tranny/clutch should handle it if you leave engine stock. Not sure on sheetmetal. I don"t know if intercooler will be in way on left side of hood or not, the same for the turbo, may go right in or may have to do some fabricating.

I"m not a Deere man, but when I was going to school for ag mechanics one of the guys did a 466 swap into a 4430. It was ten years ago... but if my mind holds it was pretty much a bolt in deal. If the bolts are bigger in the new motor but in the same position just drill the frame rails to the right size 21/32 or 11/16. Even if the front frame rail mounting holes are a little bit off you can slot the holes with a die grinder. You will for sure have to get the air intake and filter assembly from a turbo tractor and cut a hole in the hood for the new intake system. I do not know if the cooler will clear the hood, I"m helping a guy turn a 4240 into a 4440 right now so I know the intake stuff for sure just don"t know the cooler stuff. Hope this helps a little
