Farmall M horsepower increase

I have a 1941 Farmall M. I pulled with it once so far and came in 6th out of 23 pullers in the 6500# weight class. After pulling I drained the calcium from the tires so that I could also get into lighter weight classes and I am currently working on making wheel weight brackets for the rear wheels. It is all stock except for the #167 governor spring I recently put on it. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on cheap ways to increase the horsepower on my tractor and how much horsepower the mods will add?
Thanks!

Do some searching on the archives involving this topic. There are some gains to be had by simple carb work, timing, tuning. Dry air filter will help also. For the cost of gaskets, smoothing the ports and some blending in the head will net some gains, also port matching the manifold and head. A camshaft is relatively cheap and not a bad job on an m. Some time on a dyno will be valuable for the tuning process.

Hope this helps.

I have also been told that a hotter coil and plugs will increase horsepower as well as an electronic ignition. Do you know about how much horsepower these will give me? None of the websites selling them say.

For $450 this site sells a stepped head over bore rebuild kit.

Add a super m/400/450 gas head, and shave the bottom a little,
and you should be in the 55+ HP range.

Check your head casting number. If its a 8060 or 8574 at least you have a ok head then. start with a good valve job and like suggested shave at least 50 thousands off. mild port work then start tunning the carb and ignition. just search this site for more info. A dyno works best if availible. Watch the 8060 head though, they like to crack around the exhaust seats...

You need to go with an over bore kit. The Super M already has the advantage. Put a good head on it the 8060 isn"t the best. They make aftermarket that work very well. Match the cylinder head to the manifold and make sure it all flows good with out restrictions. Have it located and pinned to the head. Have your carbuerator gone thru by somebody who knows what they are doing and get the proper set up so it gets what it needs. Find a 4 weight governor. Make sure that everything it tight from the throttle all the way to the governor. There Are Multiple things that can be done. Put it on a dyno and adjust so it makes good power at stock rpms ant 540 on the dyno. Bottom line is that cubic inches usually win. Unless you have a Gary Baker 436. He has it figured out.
