1940 B Horsepower

So I just finished building my 1940 JD B it was
bored out to 190 cubic inches with high
compression aluminum pistons. Its runnning on e-85
with an A carb and cold gas manifold and hot mag.
The head has been decked 20 thousands and has been
ported and polished. Can anyone give me an idea of
what kind of horsepower this will make. Ive read a
couple other posts that take cubic inches times
20% efficiency, is this a good place to start or
is that efficiency wrong? Also would you guys
recommend getting the cam ground?

I'm about to work on my 39 B, going 4.75 x stock stroke w high comp. Let me know what kind of numbers you see, I'd like to know what I can look forward to. Thanks

Orig I think 39/40 was rated for like 18hp. I bet you see around 22-25hp. I have a 40 I'm working on that was my grandfathers. Orig block wasn't very good so I bought a mid year block and head. Crank wasn't the best either. Having josh blackburn do a 7" crank boring mid year block to 4 11/16 with his cam. Murphy roller rockers, bigger int valves from josh and I do all most of all our head porting work. Converting to electric start with around 240lbs comp. Should run good.

You started with 14.03 HP at the Drawbar (stock)..

I would not expect to see much over 30 HP (Drawbar) now, unless you did other engine work also (different Cam + RPM increases, etc.)..

A WELL-DONE Performance Valve Job is worth several HP also..

Ron.

I know of fellows who are running Early JD "B" pullers who have over 500 Cu. In. engines. and they seem to estimate around 90+ HP at the engine..

Hard to tell for sure, the PTO would not take that kind of load and a flat Belt tends to slip..

I would put a late b cam in instead of the original, but it might be hard now that its all put together. Also adding more compression will add more power why not weld a set of rods?

A fresh re-ground cam and followers are required to make the engine breath.
Port matching, blending rough edges out of the ports and valve bowls. Then a three angle valve will also improve cylinder filling.
With the above work and those pistons. The souped B would make approx the HP of a stock 1940 "A".
Tuning the correct mixture and timing is vital.Don't run 87 octane pump gas either. Hopefully compression is now up to approx 8 to 1.

I'd have josh do cam and rockers..in order to make it run u need compression...cut weld rods to make them longer..u cod .maybe get 40hp out of it...josh is the person to talk

I guess if u run a d block in a b with about 16/1 compression with cam stock stroke maybe 20-30% over it may get close to 90 at stock stroke 38hp is what my 40 b makes at stock crank and cam 14-1 comp stock flat head

Here ya go , all the info we need for a quick sell!

Figure it out...

6 1/8" Bore and 7 1/2" stroke (might be more).

One '38 JD "B" pulls here in Ohio (Plain City) during the "Steam Show" and has won his class 2 years in a row.

It has one of "JDBPuller's" blocks in it.
I think it is in either Div 3 or Div 4, around 3,500 lb class.
Pulls in 2nd or 3rd and does NOT run out of power (4 speed trans in those older ones)..

Ron.

Yes, up to about 550 Cu in.

If Ray can just get over his Pancreatic problem, he will certainly be back..

Ron.

I didn't say "stock stroke" at all.

Where have you been.? These monsters have been around for 5 or 6 years..!

I have a video of Ray (1950 JD "B") pulling in a 3250# class in 6th (yes Sixth) Gear..!!
13 MPH, just for the HE!! of it..!!
Yes, it did pull down, but not until it had run up to 13 MPH..!

Ron..

I could be way off on that stroke.
I do know that he had to add a spacer over the crankcase inspection cover because the crank throws come above the original crankcase exterior.
May have been at or over 8 3/4", but I really don't care.
It has been done and the results are on the faces of the red competition I have seen in Plain City, Ohio.
They say they just plain cannot match what he has.

Ron.

The story changes. At 8.75 the crank would come through the gov. Big difference between 7.5 and 8.75. I don't really care either but atleast find out the facts before you throw imaginary information on here. Alot of people research these forums for good information and your posting information thats not true 6.125 won't fit in a 38 case either.

6.125 does not fit in any of the B cases- you have to patch over the hole in the clutch side that is made for the cyl. Sleeve. There is rumored a 6.25" one in the works with a 8.375" stroke which would be (I think) 510 c.i.

Beg your parden BUB, but 6 1/8" WILL fit, with a different specially cast Block..

Stop "Thinking" you are a hot-shot and get OFF your High-Horse (pony)..

Open your eyes and look, several are and have been pulling in Ohio and Carolina for several years.

The one here in Plain City, Ohio is only 5 3/4" Bore, but can be bored to 6 1/8" also..

Facts is Facts, warp them any way you please.

Ron.

Well, at least YOU are better informed than your smart-mouthed friend..

Ray (at Extreme) perfected these blocks and some tried anything and everything to steal his design.
IF he can lick that Pancreatic (cancer?) problem, he will be back..
Funny how NO body hands him any support or credit, just bad-mouthing and innuendos, when he cannot fight back while he is down..
I would not blame him if he told you all to go to Blazes..
I only come on here to try to offer information from experience of operating these in the REAL World (Farming). Which is more than most here will ever know about their actual use.
These fellows who are squatting in here every day sometimes need to be dragged behind the Wood Shed once in a while.
Wouldn't hurt my feelings if I never looked at this site again, but I refuse to let these Sneaker-wearing upstarts have the final say..
Probably wearing Designer Glasses and their Sister's pants(Nylon).
Crap, I have Work shoes OLDER than most fellows on here...
From what I had gathered, Josh seemed to be an intelligent Honorable builder, but often he has spoiled that by his piling-on in several instances that show a shallow, lack character..
His latest insinuation just reinforces what I suspected..

Ron.
Most have no idea that my Shop has never been posted nor mentioned on here and will not be.
Dirt-bags on here would just bad-mouth it like they have others or try to steal by one method or the other.. I only deal out-the door and cash on the Barrel-head.
