Last Nov we went to a tractor pull at White Pine Tn.we started home and Son turns the heater off,we stop at Hardees for a snack and while he goes in I turn the heater on and it blows cold air,we leave and with in a mile the check engine light comes on and temp gage showes hot and about that time it goes back to normal. We drove on home [35 mile] all was fine.I had the thermostat replaced,Monday it did the same thing again, replaced thermostat again and it did the cool heat thing again today,Talked to Dodge Diesel mechanic and he thinks head gasket[ouch] but don't seem right to me,Anyone else had this problem? truck has 103,000 miles on it.Any help would be appreciated

Is the trucks emmisions deleted, how does the over flow look, is it bubbling? Put truck in gear apply brake let it boost up a bit and watch the over flow for bubbles. If over flow is bubbling I'm afraid the hg is bad.

Definitely sounds like a head gasket, and I'm going to assume you don't have the emissions stuff deleted. That plays a huge contributing role in those head gasket problems

Most likely it is the HG, you can thank the EPA for that. Now that it is out of warranty, it is time to really make that 6.7 the nice engine it is capable of being. Delete all that EGR crap off it while you are are in there and watch your HP, MPG, and smile on your face all increase. Make sure to get the head pressure tested and checked for flatness.

If the egr cooler is still in place there could be a good chance it is cracked as well, most of the head gasket problems I have see are from deleted trucks, due to excessive drive pressure, contibuted by the non wastegated VGT, when the egr cooler is not in place and trucks not allowed to get to temp before being ran hard.

remove the radiator cap and see if it is building pressure. I would bet its a head gasket. I replaced a couple of them on those trucks. They were doing the same thing.

Thanks for the replies, not what I wanted to hear but nothing $$$$$$ won't fix.For the record 5 inch exhaust from turbo back with a short muffer,H.S. Mini Max tuner,Ispro parmeter and a bushel basket of junk took off the top of the engine and a South Bend clutch.Truck has been used but not abused, mostly used for hauling hay, cattle and pulling tractors.

I didn't have heater problems with 01 Dodge but it would run 210 pulling the trailer, a new pressure cap (from Chrysler) cured the problem, I was told to get thermostats either directly from Cummins or Chrysler and not to use aftermarket ones.

Well I've got a 12 pretty much same setup but I put a set of arp 625s in it for piece of mind, the drive pressure on these truck gets crazy with wide open throttle and turbo looses most of its efficancy after about 70mph causing high egts and lots of pressure b4 turbo (drive pressure) best thing to do is to part with the Vgt and put a 2nd gen manifold on it with s400 or something around there but if you like the exhaust brake throw a set of studs in it and toss the factory head bolts. Just my opinion. Totally differnt animal than the 5.9. I love my 6.7. Some egr coolers have been known to crack if it is still on there don't rule it out completely. Watch for the coolant resivore burping.
