turning up a JD 830

My father in-law has 28 restored old JD
tractor including 2 identical 830s one for
shows and parade and one he gave me to
plow with and pull. Right now it is stock
but would like to know how to turn up the
fuel and good ways to make some serious
power out of one. I'm a diesel mechanic
for a living so might make this next
winters project if I decide to dig into
the motor. For now what can I do just for
the local pulls to get some more power
without digging to deep yet.
 
There are a couple of guys in our antique pulling club that have 830's. They are good pullers traction wise but are too high geared in first so always power out. Don't know if it's possible, but if gear ratio could be lowered they would be competitive. The JD 720's, 730's or 620's 630's with low creeper gears out pull them.
 
I've never seen a 830 with to high of a 1st hear. I always out pull my father in-laws 730 that has better tires and more fuel. I do need to change the weight distribution. I hang the front end half the track. But I'm looking for more HP the one 80 and other 830 put 50ft on everyone.
 
On the left side of the motor under the fuel pump cover is a frost plug. Knock out the plug. Under the plug is the bolt that limits rack travel. Take the bolt all the way out, and put a new frost plug back in.
 

The real "Limiting Factor" is going to be the amount of Air the engine can get IN..

"Full Strut"..there is a 720D and an 820 (or 830) that are awesome..!!
We turned an "R" up to "17" and it put on a good show..would stand some red flame out the straight stack..
The "R" had the fast 1st gear and usually would pull down after standing up pretty good..
We had to re-enforce the rear hitch on the "R", to maintain proper drawbar height under severe strain on the sled.
We had to RPM set up far enough that we had to grind the Full Throttle Stop back to allow the throttle to travel farther..maybe an extra 200.
The 820/830 are a whole big step UP from an "R" and should never begin to pull down in 2nd gear..just spin out eventually...
Even the "R" (at only a Rated HP of 45 would man-handle a 4x16" plow and even pulled a dead JD with 2x14" in the ground and didn't falter a bit..
I am sure there have been 820's, etc Stroked and bored to 10"x10" or more..but not many..
Have FUN, but open that Intake all you can..even Port the intake Ports if you can..
Study that Governor and be SURE what you are doing..you do not want to take anything off and have loose Ball Bearings drop out (as happened on the "R")...

Not by just removing the stopper bolt. More pump and rack mods are required for "too much" fuel delivery. Some extra rpm, and cylinder head porting will help you burn that extra fuel.
 
There comes a point where more fuel doesn"t make any more power. Taking the rack travel bolt out just turns the 830 into an anti mosquito device . A cam, valve/valve seat, valve bowl , intake and exhaust work would be required to use even some of the full rack fuel.
There was an optional creeper 1st gear for the 80,820,830 & 840.
No tracks around here loose enough where a turned up 830 could spin out in 2nd gear in a 10,000lb or heavier class.
Most really struggle with the regular 1st gear.
On tracks with good traction you may need to cut and shorten the drawbar.

I did not know a 830 had two different 1st gears my 830 is weighted to 12,000 off the farm tractor I pull it in 1st gear and never run out of power,at 10,000 it will pull 2nd gear well.
 
Never in my life have even heard of an 830 powering out in first gear. You can load it to 20,000 pounds & hook it to a building & it will dig holes. They are not in first gear.
