rotory phase converter all fired up....

when I bought my Bridgeport series 1 j head mill I received a 5 hp rotory phase converter along with it....it was an industrial version but pull start with a rope.....my buddy and I finally took it and hooked it up to power to try out.....we installed start capacitors and a 10 sec relay....so now you just click the button and it fires right up.....this does not look like much but it runs very quiet un like a lot of others that I have herd.....now I will be able to install it in my shop and I will be able to run my Bridgeport, linley vertical mill/drill press and my south bend lathe that all run 3 phase...I only have single phase coming in my shop...

I will mounting the start switch on my shop wall temporary I mounted on my converter box to make shure it all worked.....

That's exactly the setup I use only mine is just a standadr 5 hp motor, start caps, timer, relay and all. Only a second is all it takes for mine to fire. Works well. mEl

Jmo, but id throw all that crap in the scrap heap, install a
$180 VFD (smaller than a 6-pack) & proceed to save 70% on
the power bill. Old ways arent always best, just a thought.

how are they for hp? do they drop down to 1/2 or 1/4 hp like static converters or no?
I had nothing in this converter figured what the heck....

I looked into the VFD drives. I am no expert on this but they only seem to be affordable for small HP needs My lathe is 7.5 horse and the VFD to run it was close to $1200. The big money break seemed to be lower than 5 HP.

Lots of nice features available too. Over current protection, under voltage protection, ramp start, ramp stop, coast stop, breaking, reverse, infinite speed adjustment, etc.

IF you had to go buy something, a drive is the way to go.
