pulling tires

Just having a discussion here as to whether the best traction comes from a tall or a wide tire. With all things the same, i.e., cubic inches which would you prefer. THanks, Dan

Well contrary to popular opinion. I would rather have a wider tire than everybody else, even at the expense of a little height. In other words, I think the most sq inches on the ground will win the majority of the time. If that is not the case why have a max tire size? Vic

that is not the case,we have beat this dead horse, narrow has it's advantages. All season I beat larger 90% of the time in slow classes, jack pot classes and championship classes

Is it written that 38" is the Limit for diameter..?

I would prefer a set of wheels and tires like the Original "Big Foot" has, then drop a gear or two..!

Ron..

Taller all the way! Try and roll your tool box across the shop floor and over top of an air hose with 2" casters. You fight like hell and can't get the wheels to get over the hose. Now if you have put 8" casters on your tool box it rolls over the air hose easy. Taller wheels have less rolling resistance, and get over obstacles, through tough spots, and up out of holes much easier. If i could, i would run a 14.9 - 46 tire, or a super tall sprayer tire.

I think a wider and a little shorter of a tire is good. up here in Ontario a lot of the mod farm guys switch from 20.8 38 to 24.5 32 more rubber on the ground and it is easier to turn a shorter tire

I agree with showcrop. I have in my short time of pulling have done better against guys that had wide tires on one track(I have narrow), then had no chance against the same guy on another track. In my OPINION, wide tires excel on muddy tracks(rainy days) while taller narrow tires do the deed on hard pack tracks.

(quoted from post at 09:30:09 10/14/13) A 15.5-38 on a 16" rim will beat a 14.9-38 on a 14" rims 90% of the time on any track

Yeah right, I watched narrow tires beat wide on a soft track all day both days this last weekend. Wide tire sit and spin on the soft dirt on top while the narrow ones dig in and grip. Mikey, come back after you have been to a couple of pulls.

Ive been pulling for 15 years now ive been to many pulls. ive pulled on all kinds of tracks wet, soft, sand ,clay and you can win with 15.5-38"s on anyone. idk where your pulling but all you have to do is put weigh on the back and out pull them by 50 feet. done and seen it happen all the time.

I know my tractor has done better w/13.6s then it did w/15.5s. The narrower tire has more ground pressure & thats traction. This past sat. I won all four class's i entered in (not trying to brag) w/13.6s when most of my comp. had 15.5s. It was 3.5 mph top cut 3500#-5000# & yes there was more then 2 in the class lol

I cant weight to get my 14.9-38 field and roads on 12" rims back from the tire cutter so I can take these no good 15.5 firestones off ! Never could make 15.5's work as well.

Well thanks guys. I can see that tire choices are like color choices. Some folks are diehard green, red or gold lovers and so it is with tall and wide. I have a Moline U Div.II that has 18.4 X 30s and I think y'all have convinced me to try some 14.9 X 38s. Thank you so much. Y'all have been very helpful.

If you can keep those 18.4s mounted. Plenty of guys travel with two or more pair of tires so that they are covered when the track calls for other than what they have on. I arrived at a pull once where the track had always been very soft, and they had just put down 18 inches of clay, wet it down, worked it up and it was like pavement.

I have 16.9x28's on my D17 which tend to dig in about 3" and spin out. I've watched guys with 14.9x38's dig in a keep going past my spot.

Now if it is a wet sticky track, my tires do excellent

I thought about that, Showcrop. Mostly around here we pull on tight, clay tracks. On occasion we pull inside pavillions where the track is more sand. I think the 18.4s would be better for that.
