Engine Building Questions/Concerns.

Hey guys-
I've been reading here for a couple years, and had planned on building my 70 up for a puller a year or two ago, but some things came up. Since I've read a lot on here and I guess I'm looking for answers as to if a normal guy can build the engine on like my JD 70. My dad has rebuilt an old 2-cylinder before, I think an A. Is the pulling motor I will want, be a pretty easy install? Doesn't seem like there are instructions or manuals really (I have the IT manual), but torque specs and things of that nature are hard to find.

What is typical to send off to the "engine builder"? I guess I'd be the engine assembler. I'd also like to have a ball park figure as to what it will take engine wise to make my 70 competitive in what I think will be Div 3? I haven't the slightest clue as to if its $3k, 5k, or 15k. I know you can spend pretty much as much as you want....but try to give me a decent idea if possible. Also I'd like this thing to be reliable to the point that I don't have to overhaul it every year, or work on it every weekend due to it being so "hot".

I've got some money saved up, and not sure if I've got enough or if what I got will do what I'm needing.

I think from what I've read I will probably be going with Josh Blackburn for the engine.

Any advice, info, help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

Great Choice josh is a great guy and does top notch work! U need
to give him a call to discuss ur options. He wont steer u wrong.

I am not a john deere guy.....but I do know josh Blackburn is a top notch guy and knows them very well.....he would be a honest builder and be up front with you and would discuss your options on what you want to build.....
good luck with the build.....

josh is good...hes busy ur best to call him about
ideas...cost..time...he built my g ..and hes got more from around
here hes working on...if u want to win..u have to go
big...murphys block ..extreme block..going to cost u 4500 to 5
grand alone with pistons..u can easily dump 15/16 grand into
it..if u just use your 70 block it will be tough..70 is smaller bore
to start with than a g...9.5x75 would be good motor..josh likes
cash..lol no credit cards

i dont think you will find a better stroker crank for john deere
than joshs...for strength..and he has good cam too

Josh has done some work for me and I'm very happy . I have a
A that he did the carb, rockers and Ryan's for me . It is a 48 hp
all day long dyno mule. I would defiantly call josh. I'm no Jd guy
but the only thing I sent out was the block for machining, and
the carb and rockers to Josh and put it together in my garage.

Southern IL Crank has about the strongest crank around IMO.

Mine in the G has lasted for 6 years and has never been ran at close to stock RPM.

ok thanks guys,

Any info on the origional post, as far as where You personally would go with the engine, and what You think the estimated cost would be...

I appreciate the help thus far, informative!
